iBF (international Business Fundamentals) with Co-op 

*This program has been approved by the Private Training Institutions Regulatory Unit (PTIRU) of the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills.

** Graduating from this program does not make you eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit.

The International Business Fundamentals with Co-op (iBF) diploma at Gastown Business College is a 32-week, PTIRU-approved program (16 weeks in class + 16 weeks paid co-op) focused on business fundamentals with a hospitality twist. Students develop presentation, communication, research, and operational skills, along with workplace readiness through a paid co-op. Career Opportunities: Students will be prepared to work as general office Support Worker.  In addition, they have opportunities to work in the hospitality field and take on customer service roles.  

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this program, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Develop a market-ready strategy for a service or product.
  • Research and present collected data in a professional and convincing manner suitable for a business environment.
  • Build and deliver boardroom quality presentations.
  • Complete a variety of work-related writing tasks including business letters, business reports, and emails.
  • Practically demonstrate the customer service skills that are particular to the hospitality and tourism sector.
  • Differentiate between the business models and strategic operational processes utilized in the hospitality and tourism sector viz. hotels, casinos, tourism operators as well as food and beverage services.

  •  The students will learn to communicate more effectively when speaking with coworkers in a business setting.  They will get a better understanding and have a deeper appreciation in engaging with others on a more professional level.

Co-op Training

The Co-op (paid) work experience is a required part of the iBF program in which the student obtains practical skills relevant to the learning objectives of the program.

  • High school graduate or 19 years of age or older at start of program
  • English Language Proficiency (must meet one of the following):
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) IBT: minimum overall score of 46;
      o Completion of 2 years of full-time post-secondary education at an accredited
      institution where English is the language of instruction and is one of the country’s
      principal languages;
      o Duolingo English Test (DET): minimum overall score of 95;
      o International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic: minimum overall
      score of 5.5;
      o Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 56 overall with no band less than 50
